What is Experiential Learning?
We as current and or future facilitators of learning, have the opportunity to help learners put new knowledge into context. Sometimes we learn new information and we may understand it, but still wonder how to apply it into our everyday life or career. A facilitator has an opportunity to do just that. We can take information and through careful development, help design a curriculum that will not only educate a student but help them to be able to understand how this new knowledge gained can be used. As cited by Berger and Lindsey (2009, p. 120) as embodied by Kolb (1984), “the experiential learning theory provides insight into how we learn from experience.” It gives students an opportunity to recall prior knowledge and apply it to new learning opportunities. Experiential learning allows students who have no previous experiences to use the new experience and knowledge learned, reflect on it and in turnand apply it to actual events, activities, careers and training in the future.
