Methods to encourage learning in the classroom
Role Play: Gives opportunity for students to act out what they have learned and
draw on new and old knowledge to demonstrate their understanding through
dramatization. Role Play also gives opportunity to share and learn about "culture." as cited by Harrison and Hopkins (1967) in Lindsey and Berger (2009, p. 135), role play is "appropriate given the belief that culture must be experienced in order to learn about it."
Simulations: Simulations may be used to give students or learners opportunity to
put into practice skills that are necessary to learn for a given career.
For example; a nurse learning CPR. They may use simulation dummies to practice breathing and physical techniques required.
Digital stories or story telling: Stories are a way for learners to demonstrate their
understanding of a given topic. This is also helpful for learners who may have "linguistic or Psychological
limitations." Digital stories can be used to create a visual reflection of the experience. Stories are a good way to reflect on prior learning and share feelings, and knowledge with others.
Filed trips: Learners have opportunity to see the knowledge they possess in action. Students can see a real life situation and observe techniques being used.
Learners will be able to take their observations and connect theory with practice.
Games: Games are a way to teach skills that are "not desirable to practice in the field." (Reigeluth & Carr-Chellman, 2009, p. 135)
Workshops ro hand-on experience: Learners will be able to engage in actual events, and or manipulate materials and work cooperatively with others to practice skills and gain an understanding of the purpose or process involved, build confidence and make mistakes and learn from them. With guidance and open ended questioning from the facilitator the learner can learn what works and or does not work. The learner can take this experience and correct prior errors to create success.
